Meet Our Indigenous Partnered Stores

In celebration of National Indigenous History Month, we are shining the spotlight on the partnerships with our First Nations stores in Indigenous communities in Manitoba.  We are honoured to work alongside Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Long Plain First Nation, and Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation. Meet our team members at the OCN, Madison and NCN stores:

What do you like about having the cannabis store in your community?
When talking with my team members about our cannabis store, we all agreed how awesome that we are located inside the Otineka Mall. What it means to me is making history for Opaskwayak Cree Nation, the first location to open on First Nations land.

Why do you like working at META?
Team OCN are a group of extremely awesome people whom I got to know very well, we all get along great, we laugh together, we help one another. We all share the same humor which makes the atmosphere at OCN META more comfortable and enjoyable for staff and customers.

What do you like about having the cannabis store in your community?

I know my favorite thing about the cannabis store being in my community is being able to see the familiar faces, people usually come from far to come to our META location in Opaskwayak. I see our community going up in the future because how we are being recognized. I have high hopes for Opaskwayak and META and that means a lot to me.

What are your favourite products at META?
I believe our team’s favourite products would have to be the Tangerine Dream in the 510 vape cartridges or any pre-rolls from Broken Coast.

I like working here because the atmosphere is great. We work together as a team and we can always put on a challenge and get it done! Plus, we always joke and laugh with each other which makes work more enjoyable!

I appreciate the customer diversity. I’ve gotten to meet people from all over the world. It’s definitely helped OCN on the radar by bringing in business, not only for our businesses on OCN, but The Pas and Rural Municipality of Kelsey.

What are your favourite products at META?
Of course all products over 19% - 26% for THC. Personally, the edible candies/drinks are great. Keep bringing in the varieties we get, because we all have different types of customers with different requests. Why do you like working at META? The atmosphere is great! We have a great team that works together, laughs together, helps each other and problem solves together.

We are proud to be the first First Nations cannabis store within Winnipeg. We are a part of making Long Plain First Nation a staple within the city of Winnipeg and helping our community to grow. Our favourite parts about our store is our location being in one of the most traveled areas in the city and our customers. We have become the favourite store for many in our neighbourhood and our customer base keeps growing day by day.

What are your favourite products at META?
META Everyday Essentials accessories because of the variety of color and use. Broken Coast products, Canaca’s HP Mango, Deep Space drinkables, Subway Scientist RIFF flower, Flyt 510 Cartridges and CBD Cream.

Why do you like working at META?
We have a great team that is fun to work with. We enjoy having staff lunches as a treat for our hard work.  We have a contest to see who can sell the most of a specific item, which has created healthy competition between staff members.

As Long As the Grass Grows
We spoke with Cindy Allard, the Chief Executive Officer of Arrowhead Development Corporation to learn more about the graphic that META collaborated with Long Plain First Nation to create.

They based this image on Treaty #1’s poem to signify the strength of the promise to Indigenous people: “As long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the river flows.”

Allard explains, “[As Long As The Grass Grows] is a saying created by the Treaty Relations Commission that resonates with all Indigenous people. It has for years since it was implemented and it was created. It was a national campaign. Every Indigenous person in this province heard it, knew it, lived it, [and] felt it. As soon as we opened our cannabis shop, it was the Chief that said we need to do something with As Long As The Grass Grows. We knew using that on reserve stores would give every Indigenous person who walked into these stores a sense of pride.”

Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation
